Thessaloniki

Being the 2nd biggest city in Greece, capital of Macedonia and home to one of the two Faculties of Veterinary Medicine, Thessaloniki marks the beginning of the Congress. Located in the Thermaic Gulf of Aegean sea, it was the second largest and wealthiest city of the Byzantine Empire. The numerous monuments and archaeological buildings add the element of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman civilizations. The cultural attractions, great food and the city’s own beauty, makes Thessaloniki one of the best options to study at. The Aristotle University of Greece - named after the greek philosopher Aristotle, is the 6th oldest (est.1925) and among the most highly ranked institutions in Greece and the first Faculty of Veterinary Medicine belongs to it.

From 15 to 20 of July, the delegates will spend their time in Thessaloniki according to their scientific program, exploring the city and participating in numerous activities in town and in the outskirts.

Volos

Volos is a seaside city situated midway on the Greek mainland. Its name originates from the Greek word βολή, which means “throw”, as the fishermen used to throw their nets into the sea from that area. Its history goes way back to the Neolithic age, but it is most popular as the birthplace of mythological hero Jason, who sailed from Pagasetic gulf, accompanied by the Argonauts, in search of the Golden Fleece. Indeed, Volos’ port has contributed a great deal to the development of the city until this day and prompted the creation of not only an economic center, but also a tourist destination that combines mountain and sea, history and modern culture, food to die for and athletic activities!

Volos is, also, home to the headquarters of the University of Thessaly, to which Greece’s second veterinary faculty belongs. The Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Thessaly has been founded in 1993 and is not in fact located in Volos, but at a nearby city named Karditsa. From 21st to 26th of July the delegates will get the chance both to know the city and have day trips to explore the area and to participate in workshops!
